What is Speech Therapy for Adults?

Adult speech therapy can help adults who are struggling with speech and language by learning how to communicate more clearly and confidently in their daily communication environments. Whether these communication challenges have been present since childhood or are the result of a recent diagnosis, working with a speech-language pathologist can provide the support needed for successful communication.

How Long Does Speech Therapy for Adults Last?

The duration of speech therapy for adults depends on a couple of factors:

-Diagnosis

-Severity of Diagnosis

-Frequency of Treatment needed

-Individual and caregiver involvement for carry over

For example, someone with a voice disorder might need speech therapy services for only a few short weeks or months. However, an individual with a neurodegenerative disease might need months of years of speech therapy to maintain their current functions.

What happens in an Adult Speech Therapy session?

Before starting the treatment, a speech-language pathologist conducts an evaluation to determine diagnosis, current level of functioning, the severity of diagnosis, and creates an individualized therapy plan that fits your specific communication needs.

During the first few visits, the speech-language pathologist will collaborate with you to learn your background information and communication goals. Between sessions, the speech therapist will assign home practice to facilitate carry over of the communication strategies learned during session.
